On March 14th, we had our first rehearsal. The cast was challenged to do a walk-through of the script. After a discussion of the script the director, Chad Parsons presented his design presentations in order for the cast to better understand the direction he wants to go. He brought up the central opposing actions of "Outside". For example, inside vs outside, shame vs pride, home vs guest, and seen vs invisible. What is the difference between the person you are on the outside vs the person you are on inside? How are you different online? How does social media impact students today? The assistant director, River Hedgepeth helped the cast understand the world of the play by reminding them of how it feels to be in high school. They also discussed LBGTQ+ terminology and suicide rates and mental health in the LGBTQ+ community. River challenged the cast to fill out the Gender Unicorn which is an activity to help a person better understand their gender and sexuality. It is important for the cast to understand their own identity before beginning this process because "Outside" deals will discovering one's identity and others learning how to accept Daniel's identity.
